The field for the 1999 AXiS Open, contested at Keele Golf Course on Thursday 7th October, was precisely the number that took part in 1998. That meant a full four-ball teed off at 2.04 pm on a course that was extremely wet underfoot, but in dry and improving overhead conditions.Dave Longson, AXiS Chairman, by virtue of his office was allowed to be called Dave, while Dave MacDonald and Dave Hewetson had to answer to "Mac" and "Wee Shuggy" respectively. The unmistakeable Brian Marsh completed the group. Between them, they hit hundreds of "great galf shots" and enjoyed a game played in a spirit of friendship and sportmanship which should be a model for future American Ryder Cup teams.
The competition was won by Shuggy Hewetson with a score of 100 (net 72), from Mac MacDonald, 99 (net 76), Brian Marsh, 130 (net 102), and Dave Longson (left after 15 heroic holes to pick up the kids from school but may have sneaked 3rd place if he had n't). Shuggy, Mac and Brian played the 19th hole lustily, and many business cards were exchanged before departure, which marked the final moments of the AXiS 99 Conference around 7 pm.
