AXiS Spring Conference at Station X

Bletchley Park, Bucks

30th April 2003

AXiS Spring Conference 29th/30th April 2003: VME - Action this Day

Echoing Sir Winston Churchill's annotation, Action this Day, known to be used in conjunction with wartime decyphering activities at Station X, AXiS encourages you to make an early reservation for a place at the Spring Conference to be held on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, 29th and 30th April 2003, at the Bletchley Park home of Enigma and Colossus, the world's first electronic programmable computer.

Who is AXiS and what is this event about?

AXiS is the Association for the Exploitation of Information Systems, chiefly supporting corporate users of Fujitsu Services systems with a strong focus on the exploitation of VME. The Association today is the voice of the user providing a means for your voice to be heard within the higher echelons of Fujitsu. It also provides the opportunity for member organisations to be an influence on Support and Technical matters.

This Conference provides a chance to review the first year's experience of life with VME under Fujitsu Services and reflect on the promises made at the Gaydon Open meeting last May. This will give you another chance to hear from experts at Fujitsu Services, to raise and discuss issues with them.

The main event will take place on Wednesday 30th April culminating in an interesting tour of Station X for those who have not visited the complex previously. During the afternoon of Tuesday 29th April it is planned to hold some Workshop sessions to facilitate technical discussion under the guidance of respected leaders. For the older AXiS member there will be a particular trip down memory lane to see a demonstration of George 3 running on a PC.

Tuesday afternoon will also see several vendors setting up a showcase for their current products and services. Whilst the exhibition is intended particularly for the main Conference on Wednesday it will be open for preview from 3pm on Tuesday.

A Conference Dinner is planned for Tuesday evening.

Putting Integration at the Heart of your Strategy: Mike Parsons, Gresham Enterprise Software and customer presentation
Legacy systems are valuable assets. Many applications that run on VME are, for all their drawbacks, central to the business. Yet allowing them to participate fully in the overall IT infrastructure, with a mixture of new and legacy systems, can be difficult to achieve, especially in the timescales needed today. It can be even more difficult to do so while retaining the flexibility to migrate to new platforms and the agility to respond to changing demand. Putting integration at the heart of your strategy is the way to achieve this but you need to choose a tool that deals equally with modern systems and your VME applications.

12.00 Early NOVA experience: Major user speaker
12.30 Lunch
2.00 The Great VME Board Room Debate!
Should the Board 'buy a VME' or not? The pros and cons of maintaining a VME environment will be investigated through the intrigues and politicking of a Board Room drama. Into this maelstrom will be thrown a slick, devious, some would say clever, consultant intent on change. BUT what about the risk - all of the issues will be uncovered, laid bare, and indeed exposed for public scrutiny. The audience will be invited to contribute!
3.00 Guided Tour of Station X - a chance for a close-up of Enigma and Colossus
