Cross-Platform Development Focus Group

On 22nd April 1998 at ICL West Gorton the Cross-Platform Applications Development Focus Group was inaugurated under the Chairmanship of Harold Cloutt. 19 people attended. Speakers came from ICL High Performance Systems, Nat Star, MicroFocus, Xitec Software, and Northern Rock Building Society.

The objective for the day was to stimulate discussion and identify topics which were of current interest to members and would be worth looking at in more depth at future meetings. Thriving companies will need to continue to develop applications. IT professionals in those companies must maintain an awareness of the business needs and ensure that they deliver a service which enhances competitive advantage.

The supply side presenters referred to products that will help the development process. David Johnston, from Northern Rock, explained why his company has chosen Xitec Developer, MicroFocus COBOL Workbench and Revolve/2000 as their Development Toolkit. The strategic rationale recognised that WindowsNT will be a major platform for their company, and they were satisfied with the strategic future of COBOL.

There was enthusiasm to hold further meetings. The key topics of interest for this Group will be:

maintaining the business view of IT
identifying new processes, skills and tools
support for network computing and network storage
write once - run anywhere
automatic platform adjustment
